LIBERTY MUTUAL AWARDS $60,000 GRANT TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS
OF SOUTH PUGET SOUND TO EXPAND EDUCATION

Tacoma, WA (August, 2023) – The Liberty Mutual Foundation has awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound (BGCSPS) a two-year grant in the amount of $60,000 through Liberty Mutual Foundation’s Education Initiative. These funds support our Summer Boost program in FY23 and FY24 for youth in Kitsap, Mason and Pierce counties.

“This grant from Liberty Mutual Foundation will expand vital educational opportunities for youth in our local community,” said Carrie Holden, President/CEO of BGCSPS. “We are so grateful for their investment in our youth and this grant will help us provide our Summer Boost program to our Club members.”

Summer Boost is one of our core summer programs, designed to counteract summer slide and ensure all youth, despite their barriers, are excited about and engaged in their studies, and help them graduate on time. Summer Boost is an evidenced-based program from June to August, depending on school district preference. Each student will receive intensive academic enrichment that provides individualized support, attention, resources, and technology for students.

We tailor Summer Boost at each location to meet the needs of the families we serve and partner with school districts for teacher and curriculum support, with an emphasis on reading and math. Within the Summer Boost program, teachers and BGCSPS support staff implement Summer Brain Gain, a Boys & Girls Clubs of America curriculum with fun activities for students that are aligned with common core standards. Each module takes a project-based learning approach: youth engage in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work, and a final project or production. As a result, kids develop high-order thinking skills while staying on track for the coming school year. These activities encourage youth to fall in love with learning by engaging them in unique educational experiences that spark curiosity, allow them to explore their interests, and create opportunities to build academic and social-emotional skills.

About Liberty Mutual Foundation

Established in 2003, Liberty Mutual Foundation supports the communities in which we live and work. In partnership with our grantees, our common purpose is: to invest the expertise, leadership and the financial strength of Liberty Mutual Insurance and its employees to improve the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors. Our grants help nonprofits that work to empower families and individuals who are struggling to thrive amid challenging situations. To that end, our grant-making priorities focus on organizations and programs that provide advanced security and resilience for people and communities. We seek to accomplish this through our three strategic goals: creating a safe and secure place, providing access to workforce and educational opportunity, and creating climate resilient communities.
